Slide 1: Scroll up the WhatsApp group
Teacher: You know how in a WhatsApp group, you can scroll up and see everything said today?
Student: Yeah, I do that all the time to check what I missed.
Teacher: That scrolling-up ability is a context window. The AI can “see” everything in the current chat, first message to last.
Student 2: Okay, so it remembers our whole conversation then?
Slide 2: A fresh chat, no history
Teacher: Only while the chat is open. Start a new one tomorrow and it’s like a fresh WhatsApp chat: no scroll history at all.
Student: Wait, it forgets everything? Even something important I told it yesterday?
Teacher: Yes, unless someone wrote it down somewhere permanent. Like a note in a notebook you still have next week.
Student: So the notebook is like… actual memory?
Slide 3: Persistent memory
Teacher: Right, that’s persistent memory. Someone deliberately saves your name, preferences and past decisions outside the chat, then feeds them back next time.
Student: So when people say “the AI forgot what I told it”, it’s not about intelligence?
Teacher: Not usually. The context window filled up or reset. Even the smartest person can’t recall a conversation they were never shown.
Student 2: So context window is what’s visible right now, and memory is what got written down. Two different things.
Slide 4: Scroll vs notebook
Teacher: Exactly: one is your current scroll, the other is your notebook. Confusing them causes most of the “AI forgot me” frustration.
Takeaway: Context window = what the AI sees right now. Memory = what got written down for later.
The concept in plain words
A context window is everything an AI can “see” right now: the current chat, from the first message to the last. It’s like scrolling up in a WhatsApp group to check what you missed.
But it only lasts while the chat is open. Start a new chat and it’s a fresh WhatsApp chat, with no scroll history at all. And when the window fills up or resets, the AI can’t see what dropped out of it.
Persistent memory is the notebook. Someone deliberately saves your name, preferences and past decisions outside the chat, then feeds them back in the next time. The AI doesn’t keep anything by itself; it reads what was written down.
So when “the AI forgot what I told it”, it usually isn’t about intelligence. That conversation simply wasn’t in front of it. Context window is what the AI sees right now; memory is what got written down for later.
